Current EmergenciesNovember 14, 2011 - Severe ThunderstormDear Fairfield County Residents, On November 14th, 2011 at 9:07pm a Tornado Warning was issued by the National Weather Service for northern parts of Fairfield County. At this time the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office activated the Outdoor Warning System. The warning was allowed to expire at 9:30pm. A few questions have been asked about the sirens and how they function, below are answers to some of those questions.
A NOAA tone alerted weather radio is the best way to receive weather and other important alerts. These radios can be purchased many places, including our office as long as they carry the NOAA tone alert encoding. Use of mobile phones and computers also can be a reliable way to receive these important alerts. Beginning in January 2012, Fairfield County residents will be able to sign up for Tornado and Flood Warnings to be text messaged or called to your mobile or home phone. Visit our website www.fairfieldema.com and click the Alert–Fairfield button to learn more and sign up. Many factors can cause the Outdoor Siren System to fail. Failing to hear the sirens is mostly due to the high winds associated with the storm. A siren heard on a calm day may not be able to be heard during a loud storm. Wind affects sound and how it travels. On November 14th although the storm was severe, tornadic activity was not detected until the storm had passed the areas of Pickerington and Violet Township. My purpose in writing this summary is to educate you and your family on the importance of preparedness for severe weather. Many tools are used to receive severe weather information and relying and focusing on only one can lead missing important information. Every home should have a NOAA tone alerted weather radio; this is hands down the best way to receive severe weather warnings. New technologies promise to provide warning directly to you over home and mobile phones, such as our Alert–Fairfield calling system. Television and radio also provide important information. There are many ways to receive warnings. The more you use the more prepared you and your family will be. Thank you,
